South Sydney record Roosters thrashing as legends slam disallowed bunker tries

At halftime, the score was 26-4 with the Rabbitohs, the side who lost to the Bulldogs to help Canterbury dodge the wooden spoon, piling on the two-time defending premiers.

While the Roosters appeared shocked as the Rabbitohs pulled off four first half tries, the commentators were equally as stunned by the performance.

Channel 9‘s Phil Gould was floored by the performance, admitting he was “starting to doubt” the Roosters’ three-peat hopes.

“The Roosters‘ defence hasn’t been pulled apart like this for a long time,” he said during the first half.

He added soon after: “I have never seen a Roosters side so outplayed”.

The halftime deficit was the Roosters‘ biggest since 2016 when the Rabbitohs led 26-0.

Alex Johnston celebrates with his teammates.

And they were just getting started with Alex Johnston scoring five tries with the Rabbitohs scoring six second half tries for the biggest ever win between the teams.

Johnston is now on top of the try scoring list with 20 for the season.

And the news is even worse for the Roosters as no team has ever won the premiership having lost a game conceding 50.

“Total embarrassment for the Roosters, they pulled their pants down,” Braith Anasta said. “Total capitulation for the side going for a three-peat heading into the finals, what does this do to the Roosters?”

And it could have been so much better for the Rabbitohs with two bunker decisions overturned in the first half.

Campbell Graham appeared to have forced his way across the line after 23 minutes.

That looks like he scored.

But the bunker saw it differently, ruling that Graham had dropped the ball over the line.

“I think it’s a try. I think they are really hard done by there, South Sydney,” Michael Ennis said.

Andrew Voss added: “That is the game being broken down by frames of a second“.

Even Rabbitohs skipper Adam Reynolds was furious.

“It doesn’t leave his hand the whole way down,” he told the referee. “You and I can see it on the screen.”

But it was Gould that was most ropeable.

“It‘s been a try since 1908!” Gould told Nine. ”The fun police have spoken. It’s been a try since time began.

“They‘re looking for things to overrule. It’s a trivial decision. It’s a disgusting decision.”

Soon after, a pass from Cody Walker appeared to have hit the shoulder of the Roosters‘ Luke Keary with Rabbitohs forward Mark Nicholls winning the race to the ball.

Sent upstairs by referee Gerard Sutton as a no try because of a knock on, bunker official Ashley Klein who said he had “insufficient evidence to overturn that decision”.

It’s hard to believe it could be so bad for the Roosters.

But it was also ruled a penalty as Luke Keary was judged to have tackled Nicholls, although no professional foul sin bin was adjudged.

Voss was stunned by the call.

“I am bewildered by that,” Voss said.

“A week out from the finals, I do not believe that’s now not a sin bin.”

Nine‘s Danika Mason said: “That’s a try EVERYDAY”.

Former NRL.com and Big League journalist Martin Gabor tweeted: “The “insufficient evidence” excuse is such a cop out. Nicholls didn’t touch it. That’s the evidence. Stop looking for indiscretions when they don’t exist. The Bunker has to stay. But we have to change the people who make the calls. These are frightening errors”.

Former dual code international Lote Tuqiri slammed the call as a “Howler!!!! Officiating again ordinary”.

This is some pounding the Roosters are under. No form v Bulldogs here for Souths. Plus two wrongly disallowed tries. Incredible from Rabbitohs. Robinson’s shell shocked face in the box says it all. #NRLSouthsRoosters— Robert Grasso (@RobertGrasso) September 25, 2020

It now sees the Rabbitohs hosting the Knights in the first week of the finals next week, while the Roosters will have to wait to see if they play the Panthers or the Storm.
